Writing in our Federation

We have adapted the Jane Considine, The Write Stuff approach to create our own approach to the teaching of writing which is based on the principles of how we learn. The approach offers a structured yet creative framework that empowers all children to become confident, purposeful writers. Her method breaks down the writing process into manageable steps through the use of The Writing Rainbow, which helps pupils understand the building blocks of effective writing – from grammar and sentence structure to vocabulary and authorial intent.

Children are taught to write with clarity and flair by exploring the three zones of writing: ideas (FANTASTICs), grammar (GRAMMARISTICs), and techniques (BOOMTASTICs). This allows them to craft engaging, well-structured pieces across a range of genres. The approach encourages talk for writing, modelled examples, shared writing, and sentence stacking – all designed to build confidence and deepen understanding. Jane Considine’s method enables pupils to take ownership of their writing and develop a clear authorial voice, while still meeting the expectations of the National Curriculum.
